With MDW upon us, the streaming platforms have been on FIRE of late which is great for some couch time. Most of the movies in this list are pretty new and just released, so you will be getting NEW movies to satisfy your appetite. One I want to specifically call out is LONE SURVIVOR, it’s probably one of my favorite war movies because of the weight of the story and how INSANE it is. This weekend for many, is about having fun, but let’s not forget what it’s really about, remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country. To all those, I say thank you.
WEEKLY MUST WATCH
MISSING (2023)
DRAMA
NETFLIX
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 90%
MISSING is one of the great thrillers from this year with a twist that even I did not see coming. This is a sequel or maybe more of a continuation of a film with the same theme called ‘SEARCHING.’I like to call these technological thrillers because one of the main characters is technology and how it’s used to solve the mystery. Missing follows a young girl trying to use all means possible through technology to find her mom that has gone missing in a foreign country. I know it sounds weird and maybe not your cup of tea, BUT TRUST me, this one is worth watching this weekend. I know many say this a lot, but this did have me at the edge of my seat, and every twist and turn was satisfying. It’s a simple premise with an updated twist that will have you questioning your ability to use the internet. Do not have this one go MISSING in your queue this weekend.
DOUBLE FEATURE
D&D: HONOR AMONG THIEVES (2023)
ACTION/ADVENTURE
PARAMOUNT+
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 93%
To say I was skeptical that this one would be good would be an understatement. I am happy to report that I was DEAD wrong. This movie is GREAT. It’s a fun family film full of good action and some really good jokes. I say that seriously; I caught myself laughing out loud at certain parts of the movie. I am always cautious about movies based on games cause, historically, they are terrible (See DOOM). The movie’s plot is simple; it’s a group of characters going on a quest to save the world and the main character’s daughter. There is magic, funny characters, and very smart humor along the way. Launch a quest on the couch and watch this one!
THROWBACK PICK OF THE WEEK
LONE SURVIVOR (2013)
ACTION
MAX (Used to be HBO MAX, yeah, I know it’s dumb)
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 87%
I couldn’t write a weekly review list on Memorial Day Weekend without including one of my favorite war movies. Lone Survivor is up there for me when it comes to that mix of a good story and an emotional one too. The story itself is INSANE as it details the true story of Operation Red Wings, where four members of the U.S. Navy SEALs, including Mark Wahlberg's character, Marcus Luttrell, are tasked with capturing a notorious Taliban leader. Faced with a tragic turn of events, their mission becomes a desperate fight for survival. The film's intense action sequences, heart-wrenching performances, and brutal honesty about the realities of war make Lone Survivor a must-watch, especially this weekend. Prepare yourself for a powerful cinematic experience that pays tribute to the bravery, brotherhood, and sacrifice of those who serve. This isn't just a movie; it's a salute to real heroes.
THREE AND OUT:
MOTHER (2023)
ACTION
NETFLIX
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 67%
If you have ever seen the movie ENOUGH starring JLO, there are some similarities. This is your typical mother trying to protect her daughter at any cost movie. I like these movies because there is a ton of action, and this one is no different. This time JLO is a mercenary who is pretty badass, to be honest, and she has to protect her daughter from killers. This is not a movie that will have you thinking or pondering life, it’s JLO kicking ass and taking names, and that’s alright with me.
AMERICAN MURDERER (2023)
DRAMA
HULU
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 92%
American Murderer tells a twisted tale of a conman who descends into a pile of madness and lies that leads to a brutal murder. This movie is interesting in the fact that it’s not going to blow you away in the first 5 minutes. You have to give this one time to develop because the character acting in this will keep your eyes on the screen. It’s a sick look at the human condition and the extremes one will go to keep their lies going. This is based on a true story; if you google it, you will see the surprising twist I did not see coming. I won’t spoil it, but it’s pretty shocking how the true story plays out at the end of it all. The acting is superb, and Tom Pelphrey is magnetizing as our main character, and you really can’t stop looking at him and what he’s going to do next.
WHITE MEN CAN’T JUMP (2023)
COMEDY/SPORTS
HULU
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 66%
I am never a big remake guy; I think Hollywood is running out of ideas if we are just going to make a remake of old 90s flicks. But this one is fun. I see all the hate online, but you have to take this movie for what it is; it’s fun. It’s basketball, an updated story from the original, but the bones are there for a great movie. The basketball scenes are pretty damn good too. This is a perfect popcorn sports movie, where it’s not gonna win an Oscar or make you cry or jump up in excitement, but it will do what it was made to do, entertain, and that’s fine with me.
WHAT I AM WATCHING NOW
TINA (2021)
DOCUMENTARY
MAX
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 91%
RIP to a legend. Nothing needs to be said; Tina Turner was a legend and is one of those special talents that comes around once in a generation. This is a great doc, and it does her justice—no better way to learn the greatness of an icon than in her own words.
