The SUPERBOWL is the pinnacle of sports but also a big day for movie fans. Below are my TOP three trailers that really got me excited for this summer movie season.
THE FLASH: This movie has been overshadowed by a ton of controversy by the main lead, Ezra Miller, but from all the buzz about this movie, it might be really good and a reset for DC to get their comic division on track. ALSO, MICHAEL KEATON and BEN AFFLECK are back as BATMAN, and that is enough for me for the price of admission. The fact that they are kicking off their new era of movies with one of the most famous comic storylines is a heck of a move, but we will see if they pull it off.
INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY: I have been excited for this movie since it was announced. I dressed as Indiana Jones for five straight Halloweens. So you know I am serious. I was not a fan of the latest one outside of the original trilogy, but this one seems different and catching INDY at a time in his career when he is older and still having to fight NAZIs is pretty damn cool. James Mangold is leading this film, and if he does what he did with LOGAN, then as an INDY fan, I am excited to see this one multiple times in the theatre.
65: JURASSIC PARK should not monopolize dinosaur movies in Hollywood. I am extremely excited for an original-ish dinosaur movie with a space-type background and some good acting in Adam Driver. I am a big Dinosaur person; as a kid, I would go to dino camp every year. 65 looks promising, and just from the trailer alone, I think that this movie will be a big step for the future of dinosaur movies outside of the Jurassic Park franchise.
BONUS: JOHN WICK 4: I couldn’t help myself but write about a NEW trailer that just came out today that I am excited about too. I have said many times that John Wick is by far the best action franchise in the last ten years; the action and the world-building of an assassin cult are awesome, and Keanu plays the role perfectly. Look for this one to make a big splash in theatres, and if you’re an action head like me, this is Christmas for us.
WEEKLY MUST WATCH
YOUR PLACE OR MINE (2023)
ROMANCE/COMEDY
NETFLIX
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 40%
I will say one thing about this movie; it’s great to have Ashton Kutcher back on my TV. This one is your prototypical RomCom. Boy and girl are friends, but secretly love each other and go years without telling each other. But this time boy and girl are Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon. So the story goes like this, Reese Witherspoon needs to go to NYC to go to college (weird, I know), and Ashton Kutcher being the good guy he is, says he will travel to LA and take care of her kid. Some funny moments happen in the movie, and it makes you feel good about love, and the characters are good; what more do you want? Choose your place to ensure that you watch this one for an hour plus of feel-good fun.
TUNE IN. DON’T TUNE OUT
YOU (2018)
THRILLER/SUSPENSE
NETFLIX
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 74%
"You" on Netflix is a thrilling rollercoaster ride of a show that will have you hooked from the first episode. But be warned: once you start watching, you won't be able to stop. It's like trying to resist the urge to eat an entire pizza in one sitting - it's just not possible. The show follows the story of Joe Goldberg, a charming yet slightly creepy bookstore manager who becomes obsessed with different women throughout the series. From there, things spiral out of control as Joe's stalker tendencies go into overdrive. Now, I know what you're thinking - "Wow, that sounds super creepy and unsettling." And you're right; it is. But somehow, the show manages to make it all seem kind of...funny? I mean, not in a ha-ha way, but more in a "I can't believe this guy thinks he's doing the right thing" kind of way. This is definitely worth your time with Season 4 just launching this past week, YOU won’t be able to put this one away once you start.
THROWBACK PICK OF THE WEEK
HEAT (1995)
ACTION/DRAMA
HULU
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 94%
"Heat" is one of the GOAT movies featuring an all-star cast led by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The film pretty much put a stamp on the bank robbing genre and is not your typical cops and robbers type story but showcases some deep characters that sometimes you’re on the side of the bad guys. The performances in "Heat" are top-notch. De Niro and Pacino both deliver stellar performances, playing characters who are both flawed and sympathetic. What really sets "Heat" apart is its action sequences. The film features some of the most intense and well-choreographed shootouts in movie history, and even if you’re not a bank heist movie fan, this one will TURN UP THE HEAT in your home and you will be glad you went for a ride you won’t forget.
THREE AND OUT:
THANK YOU FOR SMOKING (2005)
DRAMA
HULU
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 87%
Thank You For Smoking: a film that will make you feel bad for laughing at smoking jokes. Aaron Eckhart plays a lobbyist for Big Tobacco, who is the king of ‘Spin’ and defends smoking companies while seducing everyone in his path. It's a satirical take on the slippery world of lobbying and propaganda and will leave you feeling both entertained and guilty for rooting for a nicotine addict. Overall, a smoking hot comedy that doesn't need a warning label.
2GUNS (2013)
ACTION/COMEDY
NETFLIX
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 66%
2Guns: the buddy-cop comedy that's a barrel of laughs and bullets. Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg team up to take on drug lords, the CIA, and their own trust issues. The plot may be convoluted, but the chemistry between the leads is undeniable. They're like Riggs and Murtaugh, but with more quips and less hair. So grab your popcorn and your pistols, because this movie is two guns up!
THE CRAZIES (2010)
ACTION/HORROR
HBOMAX
Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 56%
This movie will make you want to stock up on Purell and stay away from small towns. Timothy Olyphant stars as a sheriff trying to survive a viral outbreak that turns his fellow citizens into homicidal maniacs. It's a fast-paced horror flick that will have you on the edge of your seat and questioning why you ever left the city. So grab your hazmat suit and your sense of humor, because this movie is crazy good.
