The fun is only beginning with these picks

Another week, another set of movies and TV shows will make you say " WOOOOW" (Owen Wilson's voice). We're going for a quick vacay in the woods where nothing could possibly go wrong; then we meet up with a not so innocent Girl from Plainville, followed by an escape plan that is life or death. We take a quick detour to the library to learn about the Holmes everyone should know, Enola. Finally, we do everything possible to get home and break our contract and make those who wronged us pay.

WEEKLY MUST WATCH

The Rental (2020) Netflix
Thriller
I remember hearing about this movie because it was directed by Dave Franco, brother of James Franco, and it starred Alison Brie (his wife). I was skeptical about this movie because, without reading anything, I thought it was a supernatural, haunted house movie. It turns out it's much more than that and well worth the watch. The movie follows two couples as they head to an Airbnb in the woods for a quiet vacation. As you can guess, everything is anything but quiet. The movie movies pretty quickly keep you engaged cause you know something sinister is afoot. It's your typical, you never know who's watching type flick, but it's well done and will make you think twice about renting an Airbnb.
TUNE IN. DON'T TUNE OUT.
(For the TV Lovers out there)

The Girl from Plainville (2022) HULU
Drama
I mentioned the documentary that this show is based on last week, and to my surprise, the first three episodes of the show deliver on showcasing new aspects of the case of Michelle Carter. Elle Fanning is absolutely terrifying as Michelle and brings the character to life in a sinister sociopathic way that will definitely have her in awards consideration. There are moments when she is on screen and knowing what you know makes your skin crawl. If you need a quick refresher, this show follows the insane case of the texting suicide of Conrad Roy, where Michelle Carter was found to be at fault. The show goes deeper into the details, and the performances alone will keep you glued to the screen. This one is worth your time and will have you thinking about the last text you sent.
THROWBACK PICK OF THE WEEK

ARGO (2012) NETFLIX
Thriller
ARGO-Fuck Yourself
No, that is not my review of this 2012 Oscar-winning movie; it's a line that is one of my favorites. This is a Ben Affleck special for which he won best director. This is BY FAR one of my favorite thrillers in a long time. The movie follows a CIA agent (Affleck) as he tries to help a group of Americans escape a foreign country. The crazy thing is this is based on a true story. I won't give much away, but the way the plan is put in place and the various involved actors is perfect casting and directing. This movie will keep you on the edge of your seat, especially the final act. I am a big lover of Comic book movies, but these unique story gems really get my blood going. I can't say it enough; THIS IS A MUST WATCH.
THREE AND OUT
A healthy mix of TV and movies for that next night in.

Hacks (2021)
HBO Max
Comedy
Hacks is one of the single best comedies I have seen in a long time. When I first started this show, I wasn't sure if I would like it, but HBO does what it does best, it delivers. The show is about a blackballed comic writer who starts to write for a comedian who many think has lost her fastball. I can't explain what makes this show great; it just has something special that makes you want to continue this story.

Minx (2022)
HBO Max
Comedy
What is Minx? Well, Minx is a show about a down on her luck feminist who ends up starting the first pornographic magazine for women in the 70s. There's a lot to unpack in that sentence, but the show excels because it's not a raunch fest; it has heart. The comedic beats are great, but the two leads steal the show. Jake Johnson (New Girl fame) plays the porn magazine owner who gives the female writer a chance, and it's their relationship that steals the show. You don't have to cover your eyes for this one, because it's excellent.

Enola Holmes (2020)
Netflix
Mystery/Adventure
This movie is one of the many reasons why I started this newsletter. I wanted to give people some things to watch that I feel never got their due shine. This movie is one of those reasons. Enola Holmes is a delight from start to finish. Millie Bobbie Brown is a star, and her presence on screen and pizazz carries the movie through each act. Enola Holmes is about...you guessed it, Sherlock Holmes's sister's quest to find their mother, who has mysteriously disappeared. This movie is fun, fast, and will keep you wanting more from the Holmes family. This movie has already been green lit for a sequel, and when you watch it, you will know why. There's no mystery why ENOLA HOLMES should be in your Netflix queue.
WHAT I AM WATCHING NOW

The Contractor (2022) Prime Video Rental
Action/Thriller
Do you like action movies where military contractors are sent into crazy situations and have to use their training to get themselves out of it? If you answered yes to this question, this movie is right up your alley. The Contractor is your run-of-the-mill military-style action where one man must face insurmountable odds to return home to his family. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid flick, and I LOVE these types of movies. The action is fantastic, and the movie does what it's meant to do, entertain at a high level. This is the perfect weekend movie to settle in and get lost in the world of high-paced military espionage.
